Support for STL files?

Hello,
I have 60W MOPA fiber laser and 100W CO2 X700 clone.
My question is if/when Lightburn will support STL files natively. Right now we need to convert the stl to a png using an online tool. However the results from this process don’t seem as deep or detailed as similar 2.5D work done with ezcad3. Please advise, thanks!!

Personally I doubt there will be … only because most stl files are 3d. Lightburn is really 2d… generally speaking…

@JohnJohn might be able to give you a more definitive answer. The only 3d type effect in lightburn is the ‘grayscale’ for co2.

I understand there is a 3d slice mode with fiber lasers… Doesn’t address the svg issue.

Trying to talk the spouse into a mopa fiber… a bit jealous here…

I think the application intended here is for 3D Sliced engravings. The STL file can be used to provide profile and depth information. Might be a nice built-in but should be more than serviceable using an outside utility. I don’t see why the same effect couldn’t be achieved assuming the PNG image is created like for like.

When I need to generate a flat file from an STL, I’ll use either Fusion 360’s project feature, or use OpenSCAD projection() to create an SVG. One can get a free hobbyist license for Fusion 360 and/or OpenSCAD is multi-platform and free without restrictions.

I have seen some preliminary work on this. I can’t say ‘Soon’ or which ‘quarter’ or when, but I feel that I could safely say that it’s in motion.
