Support of online drive

Hi guys,

I am using a pc in my house and one in the shop with the CO2 laser. I understand that online drives are not supported directly. I don’t like puting my files on a USB key to transport them. Other problem is I dont backup my two PCs, so I’m always afraid of losing years of work. And of course, the files dont sync on the two machines. Any simple way to achieve this in an efficient way.

Thanks a bunch!

also would like to sync my art and material libraries

You can use a NAS, some offer solutions to sync backups.
A good thing is you cam make a regular “User Bundle” as a backup and also to have the same settings and files in both PCs.

You’re not going to get much sympathy here, just how smart you are.

It takes a few minutes or so to do a backup, or at least start it and only a fraction of a second to lose all of your years of work. So it doesn’t bother you too much and it’s not if, it’s when.

If you mean some of the standard file servers, some of these they didn’t talk well with.. Only one of the Lightburn people can probably answer that.

You didn’t mention what OS you have, but I run Linux and you can remotely mount a drive. I used this for about a year. Requires an Ethernet connection, which is the smart way to use a Ruida anyway. All OS’s have this ability, the setup is a bit different for each OS.

I can connect to my Ruida simultaneously from my office or garage pc, so be aware. Likely because it communicates using UDP.

Make sense?

:grinning_cat:

I actually backup my important files (Lightburn and some legal documents) in google drive. But that means saving locally, the copying them from file explorer to Google drive. But that’s manual, cumbersome and I don’t do it religiously. Same with my material and art library. My Ruida I connect via USB. Works well. Don’t really see the use of getting my house PC connected to Ruida, because I wouldn’t want to start my laser from the house for security reasons. I might consider Persec’s suggestion of using a NAS, but I’m not to computer savy, and NAS seems to be an expansive solution for a retiree with not much resources.

You have to decide on the cost of a NAS box to the cost of those lost or corrupt files.

With a NAS box, you can get software that will automatically save any changes to the file server (NAS box). then you do not have to remember.

I agree with @jkwilborn , no mercy if you ignore backing up religiously at no cost.

Let me be more clear. I do back up my important files. But I don’t do PCs backup, for a number of reasons (for instance, I close my PCs when not in front of them so it won’t run backup at night, and during the day, backups slowdown my PC if I work on them).

The way I “back-up” my files is using google drive. Except, it’s cumbersome. For instance, if I buy a file, say I install it on my art library. Then save the file on Google drive. Then I download the file on the other computer and install it on the second PC. Then bring it in lightburn and put it in my art library again. The issue is not the protection of my files, but rather the lack of synchronisation. Files, settings and material and art libraries. Same thing if I modify a file, change a setting in material library. always have to not forget to do the same operations on two PCs.

So my real issue is making sure its synchronised. And that I don’t have to do all these manipulations to be up to date on both PCs. Even if I did PC backup on both, they wouldn’t be synchronised.

Thought I may not be the only one using two PCs, and that some of you guys might have a solution to suggest. “You’re not going to get much sympathy here, just how smart you are.” was a useless, unconstructive comment.

Again, thanks in advance.

I use 3 PC’s on my WIFI network, and have a 4TB Synology box for the NAS. You might consider a USB 3.0 storage drive. Not too expensive and you could set it up as a shared drive on one of your computers.

there are always options.
