Switching between Diode and CO2 always requires going back to change units

Hi, when I switch between using my diode and my CO2, I always have to go in and change over my units. I notice this (obviously when looking at the Speed/pwr for the layer) but more so when I go to frame my image over the item I’m engraving. On the CO2 it’s deathly slow framing, but the value for “Speed” is correct. Then I remember that I need to check my units. Lightburn recognizes I’m on one or the other for sure because when I look at my Lightburn settings, it’s properly under “Better for CO2” but it has hopped to Inches/mm/sec. When I change it to mm/sec and go to my move window and re-enter the correct value, everything is back to normal.

Is this the same for everyone? You have to manually go in and change each time you switch from one to the other? Would think you should be able to save this somewhere so that when you select your device in the drop down, it automatically loads this if it doesn’t do it automatically. But I do not see a save or export settings button on the Lightburn settings window.

No. Unit settings should be retained automatically on a per device basis.

Review your prefs files. There is a Units entry under the Settings portion of each device. I believe a value of 0 is set for mm/s and 1 is mm/min but I haven’t validated that definitively.

I don’t know where Lightburn stores this stuff, but it has to be related to the device and device setup…

I set mine in mm/s as I’m used to seeing it run that way… so I use all my machines are in mm/s…

It’s confusing enough, this just adds another layer of obfuscation for me … :face_with_spiral_eyes:

I’ve had something similar going on, so I’ve gotten into the habit of clicking on the General Settings icon (click OK) and then Device Settings. I do this every time I switch between the diode and CO2 lasers, and before I do anything else with the machine. It seems to help LightBurn remember which laser I’m working with. Just my 2 cents worth

I just open two instances of lightburn and have one set to inches mm sec for the co2 and the other instance set to mm sec for my diode

OK thanks everyone, thought there was a point where it was set and Lightburn remembers.

@LightBurn how hard would something like this be to program in?

Thanks

I thought I was clear on this. LightBurn does remember and is retained per device. I have devices configured with different units and they dynamically shift as I change devices.

Can you confirm how you are changing the units? Is this within LightBurn->Preferences (for Mac)?

I just checked this on Mac and it seems to be working normally. Note that you may need to explicitly set the units one time per device.

Forgive me, I read your message improperly. I need to slow down. My fault.

I set through Lightburn General settings. Yes for Mac.

I’m sorry I don’t understand what you mean by

Are you suggesting opening a second window and making sure that each has the correct settings and then close out, or do you mean switch between devices in the same instance setting each and then closing out, or perhaps uninstall and reinstall?

Thank you for pursuing this and again, I apologize for reading incorrectly.

More this than the other options. In the same instance, switch to a device, if the units are incorrect, set the units appropriately. When switching devices the units should follow.

No reinstall is necessary or advised.

Is this how you’ve been doing it? And are you saying even with that, units are not retained?

If so, again, check your prefs file to see that the units are being stored properly per device as I indicated in my first reply. If you’re not sure how to do this then export the prefs file or the individual devices and upload files here. I can confirm if the units are being stored as expected.

I honestly can’t believe this was it. I must have just never set the two during the same instance. I closed down LB and opened again and it seems to have retained the settings.

Thank you!

You may wish to see below, seems like the solution was a very simple one

You might want to look below, seems to have worked for me
