Terrifying Grinding Upon Powering On; Just Updated Firmware; YRR Set Up

Hi, I have followed the very nice tutorial by Louisiana Hobby Guy at Ortur Laser YRR Rotary Setup The Only COMPLETE guide! - YouTube
to try to set up my YRR rotary device.

It was going swimmingly until the end, when I tried to Frame my glass. It wouldn’t go anywhere. Trying to do anything like Frame or Move to Selection would give me the error:

G-code locked out during alarm or jog state.

On or near line 0:

Over and over again. So I thought that perhaps I ought to update my firmware to see if that helped.
I just updated my firmware following the instructions from Ortur, with this file: ESP_OLM2_PRO_S2_187.bin

I thought it was all good, but the instant that I turned the laser on, it began to grind horribly as it sadly tried to go home. :fearful:

I thought perhaps the issue was just because my Y power was still connected to the YRR rotary and that was perhaps confusing the machine, so I unplugged the YRR and plugged the Y power back into the normal Y motor. But when I turned it on again, this time it grinded even more horribly and violently dragged itself into home. :cold_sweat:

The sound is awful and makes me feel like I am harming my machine. So it makes me anxious to keep turning it on to fiddle with it. :grimacing:

Could anyone tell me why it is grinding and dragging like that and how to fix whatever I have screwed up? Thank you so much for reading and helping.

Leave the rotary uninstalled. With the power off, slowly move the laser head to the middle of the frame. Turn on laser but be prepared to turn the laser off.

Make note of:

  1. Does noise occur immediately and while the head is trying to move home or is it crashing into the wall and making noise?
  2. If crashing into the wall, on which axis is this occurring?
  3. If crashing, this is likely because something mechanically is preventing the limit switches from being engaged. Try to identify what would be causing that and eliminate it.

If that doesn’t eliminate report back on answers to the questions and other observations.

Dear Berainlb,

The grinding happens instantly when my OLM2PS2 LU2-4-SF is turned on.
It first traveled left, then upon reaching the left wall, it began to go BACKWARDS (away from me/home) briefly, then began to move forwards towards Home. Grinding awfully all the while. Then it presses the limit switch at Home and stops like it hadn’t just gone totally insane

I took a video of this in case I could share it for a better idea of what’s going on. I see that I cannot share videos on this forum however. But I could send it or post it elsewhere like on social media, like Instagram or TikTok, if you like.

I even zip tied the power cable and air assist tube up and away from the laser head to make absolutely sure it could not be in the way of the switches. It seems to be very confused about where Home is and how it should turn its motors to get there.

I have the Y plugged into its normal motor. And I tried disabling anything that had to do with the rotary.
I will also paste the Console log at the bottom in case that tells you anything.

Edit: I have just tried clicking the Move buttons to test it out. It travels left and right fine. But when I tried to move up (back), it grinded horribly and lurched and wouldn’t go. That tells me something is up with that motor?

Please let me know what else I can share to help describe my issues for you. Thank you so much.

(Here is the log from last night. You can see before I updated the firmware, it was OLF 185, and it grinded a little then wouldn’t respond to me bc of the jog error. Then, I updated the firmware, which is when you see OLF 187, but now it is scarily grinding.)

I don’t see anything wrong in your settings.

Are you certain that you plugged the cable for the Y motor in the correct orientation? Can you recheck that you didn’t plug it in backwards?

If that doesn’t work, can you post the video on any publicly accessible site or file sharing app?

Also, can you take a full screenshot of LightBurn and post here?

Dear Berainlb,

I just posted the video to my Instagram which is of the same name TangyThang.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CiTl0V_pFt-/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Hopefully that link works for you.

I will pull the laser out of the enclosure and take a hard look at everything and unplug and replug the motor cord and such. Thanks!

My apologies, I forgot to give the screenshot. Here you go.

Watched the video and I have no idea what’s going on.

The noise definitely sounds like it’s coming from the motors. Were you able to review the connector?

If that doesn’t resolve I’d like to see if the issue can be isolated.

Can you disconnect the Y motor and turn on the machine? Does the X motor move smoothly by itself? Then reconnect Y but disconnect X. What happens then?

Dear Berainlb,

Thanks so much for your help! After I just got in there and unplugged and replugged, it seems to move fine now… Phew…

I will try to set up the rotary device again later tonight or tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it to go without too many issues! : )

Okay. That’s a relief as it definitely wasn’t a normal situation. Glad you’re back up.
