Text Etching on Anodized Aluminum

I’ve got a problem I’ve been unable to troubleshoot and hoping ya’ll can help. It is primarily occurring when I’m etching small text (about 1/8" tall). As you can see from the photo, it appears that when the file is sent to my machine, it seems to add a duplicate image, but offsets it very slightly to one side. It etches the letters this way too and the result looks sloppy and not at all like the font I see on my computer screen.

I’m pretty sure there is something simple I am overlooking but can’t seem to isolate it.

I have tried different Speed, Power and Interval settings with no improvement. What am I missing???

Speed: 100
Power: 12
Interval: .055
Bi-Direction: ON
Hatch: OFF
Air: OFF
RAMP: OFF
lightburn 1.7.08
155W laser
Material: .02 Anodized Aluminum

My assumption is you’re scanning these, although strange it should show up in the machines preview screen.

I’d initially turn bi-directional scan off and see if that changes it on the machines display.

Do you mind posting the source?

Your interval is set to 0.055, I assume is mm … you left out units.

Most co2 laser beams have a spot size around 100 - 200 microns or 0.10 - 0.20mm. Do you need an interval as small as 0.055? Just curious.

Thanks Jack - turning off Bi-Directional tightened it up considerably. I increased my speed to 300 and power to 20 to compensate for time and things are looking pretty good now. I guess I just needed someone who’s head wasn’t buried in frustration to see the problem. Much appreciated!!

Might want to check out this documentation on how to make a scanning adjustment.

You machine should work in bi-directional mode, but I usually don’t see it on the machines console.

When you turn off bi-directional scan, it doubles the job time.

Before you change anything, make sure you make a copy of the current configuration and save it. It’s nice to have the original in case you have any issues.

You can save your current configuration via Edit → Machine settings

After looking at that documentation, I can assert that is exactly what my problem was. Never played with that setting - looks like I’ve got a new side project to dive into! haha

Thanks again!
