Tracing an image but getting gaps when putting the pieces together

Sorry in advance if I’m in the wrong spot for the question.

I’m trying to cut some MDF but I’m getting a gap when i put the the MDF pieces together. Is there a way to get a more accurate trace so when I put the MDF pieces together there is no gap.

I’m attaching the image that I’m cutting and also the gap I’m getting when I put the two pieces together.

I’m currently loading the image to lightburn and using the trace tool to cut the white and gold parts of the image. After cutting I try to butt the pieces together but get that gap.

Is there a better way to cut the image to avoid that gap?

Thanks in advance!

Kerf Offset is what you need.

Thanks for that information.

I guess my next question would be what’s the best way to trace the image so that it cuts the gold and white portion separately?
I’m tracing the two separately but the line between the two is not coming out symmetrical so that they lock in perfectly. Hopefully that makes some sense.

If willing, share the current project file for this, and we can take a closer look. Might have a few suggestions to address your goal.

Thank you. I see what you are describing. I edited the image to remove the white, making it a transparency. That helped with the trace, but there is some ‘Node Editing’ required to get the boundaries to match up with each other. Zoom in to see where things need adjustment. Then use the Kerf Offset options @thelmuth shared to get the fit just right. Practice with scrap materials while adjusting the fit to save on material costs.
