Transfer from Affinity Designer

hi guys, I’m new to laser engraving. I have a Enjoywood E20 and LaserGrbl does not seem to work with it. But LightBurn is fine.

I’m now trying to figure out the best workflow for getting my designs onto wood. I like Affinity Designer and can make designs with curves that have only fill and no contour and are non-overlapping and then exported as SVG.

What I’m struggling with is how to prepare in Affinity Designer for setting speed and power in LightBurn. Some of my separate objects appear as one layer in LightBurn, but I want them at different power settings. Also some layers seem to be matching in color to what I assigned in Affinity but others have different colors. It’s confusing.

So bottom line, what’s the best way to configure my affinity designer designs in prep for LightBurn?

You can dowload a ASE file for LB colors that work within Affinity - Layer Colors - LightBurn Documentation

LB uses 1 color per layer. You have to color your shapes in Affinity to correspond to the colors in LB. The ASE file should help in getting what you want.

If you scroll down on the linked page you will find a color palette file for Affinity. That will at least get your designs matching Lightburn’s palette. The Lightburn colors cannot be changed, but you can make your designs match Lightburn.

As far as how to design, that’s like asking what yellow smells like. You have to figure that out on your own. Every design will need it’s own set of criteria to get the results you want.

With your self profession of being new to laser engraving, I suggest you try creating some simple designs in Lightburn and learn how the program handles layers, overlapping areas, cuts, etc. before you try more complex items. You may find Lightburn does everything you need natively. It’s difficult to design for an output you have never used.
