Triangular Pocket

Does anyone know how to cut a triangular pocket? I want to set a cube on it’s corner using a base with a triangular pocket that would allow it to balance for display.

Here is an image of the acrylic cube I’m working with. I have it balanced on the corner with a small plastic bottle cap.

I added a crude drawing of my project. I want to make something to hold the cube by the opposite corners and use thrust bearings to allow it to spin. I believe I’m overthinking this because now all I think I need to do is plunge a 90 degree v bit straight down to the desired depth and that should work. Although if the pocket had 3 sides to fit the 3 adjacent faces it would be better. I hope this makes more sense. Thanks for your help

It looks like that base could be made by V-Carving a simple triangle shape.
You’ll need to adjust the final depth to get the correct angle, but shis should be fairly easy:

V-Carving will be a MillMage Pro feature, and is currently only available in the PreRelease Candidate for the upcoming version 0.9.

Thanks a lot for your help. I will check out the file you made. Meanwhile I tried something in Aspire and came up with the same type of thing, a 3d triangular model.

If your cube has sharp corners, you might want to do a simple drill operation to relieve out the bottom of the 3 sided pyramid shape.

Not fully aware of the application, but would a round hole not serve just as well? Bottle cap is the proof of concept.

Ultimately I want to make a fixture and mount the cube between two bearings so it will spin like a globe on a vertical axis, similar to the desktop globes that you see. Thanks for your input.

That would work for sure. I’m just trying to think of a project to make use of these little thrust bearings I bought a while ago and make something that spins.

They fit together like an Oreo cookie and support an axial load that spins very nice. I have two sizes, 10mm OD and 18mm OD.

Mill out a pocket as deep as the assembled thickness, and the diameter. Then mill a deeper pocket within that one the diameter of the thrust bearing bore. This will allow for the corner point of a cube.

Mill the first pocket less than the assembled thickness. Then drop the bearing in and glue a laser cut disk on top so you have a tiny Lasy Susan.

That makes it simple enough. I tend to overthink stuff. One question, I assume the laser cut disk would have a hole to accommodate the corner of the cube. I guess this solution eliminates the need for the triangular 3d pocket that I was asking about earlier. Thank you
