Trouble making a design engrave properly

Hi! I’m super new to designing and laser cutting/engraving. I am trying to engrave a Grateful Dead Steal your Face logo using my Xtool D1 Pro. I have an SVG file that I am trying to use but I am having a hard time getting it to engrave in certain spots on the design…

This is what I’m trying to do…

I can only figure out how to make an outline with my SVG file. So for example, the eyes, and area around the teeth are not engraving and the preview looks like this…

I have a friend that has a Glowforge and she sent me the SVG that she used to print one but it seems to get lost in translation when I open it in Lightburn.

Can anyone help me out and give me some pointers on how to make this engrave properly? I appreciate any help I can get!

Thanks,
Avi

Just a guess here, but be sure the layer you have this geometry on, is set to “Fill” and not “Line” then try the preview again.

Thank you… When I do that it fills more of the design than I’d like it to.

Ah… you may have some open shapes here. Think of “Fill” as though someone is pouring paint into the shapes… every other boundary will be treated like a start or a stop point for the paint. You may need to do some editing of the lines and close off some areas.

There is a good video on this… I’ll have to see if I can find it for you.

[Not the exact one I was looking for, but:

A pretty good representation of the tool.]

Thank you… That’s very helpful!

Another option…
I just snagged your first image… imported it into Lighburn and did a “Trace Image” on it. This creates a new Vector Image of the boundaries of the bitmap image. I placed it on a layer and set that layer to “Fill” and voila:

I assume that is what you are wanting to do… and I never even had your .SVG file.
(Gotta love this Lightburn Software)

I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that! I’m really having fun learning this software but I have a long ways to go!

Thanks again!

I’ve only been using Lightburn for a few months… but I’m constantly impressed with what it can do.

Good luck in your laser ventures.
