Hi there. I’m new to the lasers and this is day 1 for me. So far I’ve set up my machine, connected it to LightBurn and ran a few tests. All the tests have ran successfully but I have encountered a few issues which all end up with program crashing. Every time I try and use the camera on my laser—a Roly LaserMatic MK2 XW—LightBurn crashes. I’ve imported the camera and can see it and I can even select it but the buttons below are grayed out. There is no preview and if I try and calibrate the program crashes. I’ve changed the USB connected cables to different ports on my MacBook but that did not help. So far this only happens with me trying to use the camera. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!
If you close LightBurn and then try to view the Roly camera feed with Photo Booth (Click Camera in the menu bar, then choose a camera) do you see the camera feed displayed ok?
Check also to make sure your Mac permissions are set to allow LightBurn to access your camera. This is under System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Camera
I ran in the a similar problem, although I never had a crash. What isn’t well documented is that there are TWO USB connections you need to use. There is a cable from the back of the unit with a USB-A plug for the camera. The other cable is a USB-C to USB-A that you plug into the left-front USB-C port. The USB-A ends both need to go to your computer (or a USB hub if your computer only has one USB-A port - it’s recommended using a powered hub). Once I did that, the camera and LaserMatic both work fine.
NicholasL Thank you! The camera permissions in my OS were not checked for LightBurn. I’ve granted permission and now I can see the camera. Problem solved! I’ll keep and eye out for the program crashes. Maybe this solved that too.
Hi Michael. Yes at first I did not realize that the rear USB cable was for the camera but I soon figured it out. It seems Roly has the unit and the camera separate thus the two cables. I really wish they could combine them as it would be one less cable to be yanked and take up an additional USB port.
Gabriel,
I’ve already made the suggestion that, at least, they either make the camera cable longer or bring it out the front so both cables are the same length. Another solution is to plug both of the cables into a powered USB hub. That eliminates the need for two connections to the computer.
I was also told that the next generation of the machine should have wireless and that they belive LightBurn is going to add the option for setting up an IP camera.
Hi Gabriel,
Would you mind sharing your model Mac and OS version? I am running into the same issue with LightBurn and a LightBurn compatible camera and I can’t get it running at all on my Macbook, not for lack of trying.
Thanks!
Something I discovered is that the instructions to install the CH340 driver on a Mac is unnecessary. CH340 has been supported on the Mac natively since at least Mojave. I am able to connect without any issues without installing the supplied driver or its more up-to-date version online. I wonder if that might be the source of your issue, especially if you are running Apple Silicon. I’ve already reported this to Roly Automation.
Hi S Nils, no problem. My model is a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) and I’m running 12.7.5. The post that solved this issue for me was from NicholasL. Take a look at that post above—if you haven’t already.
Are you able to see your camera via PhotoBooth?
