Unselect item after selecting multiples

I’ve noticed that I cannot unselect an item after shift+clicking several vectors. Let’s say I select 10 individual vectors and then I click the wrong one on the 11th, I cannot click it again to remove the selection, I have to start over at that point. Any advice?

No modifier keys: This is the new selection
Shift key: Add this to the selection
Ctrl key: Toggle the selection state of this thing
Ctrl+Shift: Remove this from the selection
