Used Yorahome 6550 setup help

Hello everyone, brand new to this kind of thing and have literally no idea. I was given a laser from a friend who purchased it second hand, saying this because I don’t even know what brand it is and don’t even know where to look to find that information.

I plugged the machine into power and that made the laser sound like it was charging up and then it quieted down after about 30 seconds, not sure if that is normal but it happened. I then plugged the device into my computer with Lightburn active to set up the device. The device was detected and was showing (going from memory) GRBL-M3 1.1e (or earlier). It “auto detected” the work space’s x&y values as 10mm x10mm… I don’t think that is right because when I measure the inside of the devices frame it is 27"x22", so I manually changed that to reflect the proper x&y in mm. But that was it, I couldn’t get the laser to move, turn on or do anything even after following a few beginners guides online. The laser wouldn’t turn on when I hit start and it wouldn’t move if I used anything like the location marker or the “home” feature.

I did some brief reading and it said to go into the console menu tab and type “$$” and hit enter, but when I do that nothing happens. I tried to find some other tips about setting RPM and things of that sort with no luck.

I am wondering if my device is either a) broken or b) the device is out of date and needs to be updated.

If it is the latter of the two, where would I even go to update the device, and if I did update, what should I update it to.

Thank you

I think we need to start by identifying the machine.

The laser module that moves around in the middle area should have a label on it somewhere. Can you take clear picture of it and another clear picture of the entire machine? Post those here, please?

I will get those pictures later today as I am currently at work.

OK. I believe you have a Yorahome 6550 V3 with a 40W (electrical), 7W (optical) laser module.

Here is the corresponding owner manual: https://my.yorahome.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Manual_YoraHome-CNC-Laser-Engraving-Machine-6550_v2.1.pdf

Read thru that and make sure your Lightburn setup matches what they recommend.

I believe you will need to edit or delete/recreate your current lightburn device as this most likely is NOT an M3 Device. It should be plain “GRBL”.

I’m about to head off to bed. I’ll check back later.

PS…you may want to edit your topic title to something like “Used Yorahome 6550 setup help”.

This may, or may not, work depending on your controller. First, we need to confirm the PC and Laser are talking to each other.

  1. With the laser not connected and off, powe up the PC and launch Lightburn.
  2. Go into Devices (laser window) and make sure you choose GRBL only, without any extensions.
  3. Open the Console window.
  4. Plug in the laser USB cable.
  5. Power up the laser.
  6. The Console window will show some text. Copy and paste it in the Reply box.

Once we get communication confirmed, we will move on (pun intended) to motion control.

I am following the setup guide in the manual, got to Part 3- Step 13. The section where you are to move the device… I am pressing the arrows on the control screen and there is nothing happening with the laser head… The light on the top of the laser is showing Green naturally but blue if I press the button, I am unsure which of these means it is turned on but either of those signals, there is no function with the Move.

After following your steps this is the console information

This part concerns me. It seems to indicate a not-reliable connection.

The G0, G0, G0… part says your controller cannot have the parameters updated without special software, usually supplied by the manufacturer… This is outside my realm of experience. Maybe someone else has your type of controller.

You are doing great! I appreciate your fine efforts so far!

Unfortunately, I also seem to be in Mike’s boat. I think we’re going to need more experienced eyes on this. We don’t see a lot of Yorahome issues.

I hate to invoke @berainlb or @misken because they do so much already, but I’m not sure who else might know how to proceed. I checked the Yorahome site for firmware or other support resources but didn’t anything that felt appropriate. Possibly due to the age of the machine.

An email to " support@yorahome.com " may be helpful. They sell themselves as being big on support. It would be refreshing to hear that"s not a hollow promise.

This is an interesting post.

The controller you have is marked slightly differently than what’s shown in the documentation. Leave it for now but something to look out for. If things don’t work properly then may be worth trying to move the Y-stepper to the port marked Y-axis.

The G0 messages is LightBurn attempting to connect to the controller but not it not connecting.

Can you provide the following:

  1. Full screenshot of LightBurn, please have the Laser window in view when you take the screenshot
  2. Screenshot of Edit->Device Settings
  3. Screenshot of Windows Device Manager showing the COM port assigned to the laser when connected

First, please edit the post above and remove the endless G0 lines. You can abbreviate them by
G0
[…]
G0
or something like that. Otherwise it’s very hard to scroll though this post.

As already mentioned, the board should run standard grbl firmware, maybe an older version, so grbl-m3 might be ok (but I would also change this to plain “grbl” and test.

Regarding the G0-issue, I would try to toggle the “enable DTR signal” option in LightBurn device settings. This helps in communication problems sometimes.

Additionally, try to connect using LaserGRBL. Just to rule out LightBurn settings.

In general, this board doesn’t look very good/reliable. There seem to be no heat sinks on the stepper driver chips, they should get hot very soon. And as PY mentioned, move the y-axis plug to the y-axis connector instead of the pen-connector.

LAser USB

I apologize, was out of town and no longer able to edit the post. I can remake a new thread if desired. I am very sorry about this.

I enabled the DTR signal with no change.

Connected to LaserGRBL and I am able to control the head and move the laser with the move function in that screen.

In Laser window, there’s a pull-down for the serial port. You are currently selected on COM4, switch that to COM8. That should force a reconnect. If it does not right-click the Devices button in Laser window.

Don’t enable “DTR signal” if it’s not required but try it both ways if it doesn’t work with it disabled.

Seems to be working now with the move function however, the recommended settings for the parameters of the working size doesnt mesh with the actual device, also, it seems that the “x” axis is flipped ( I press left on the move screen and the device moves right). I have the control board at what I think should be the bottom because that is where the access point for the computer makes the most sense. I can upload a picture if required.

Yes. Please do.

What are the actual dimensions for the working area of the laser? Sounds like it should be 650x500mm. You are showing 685.8 x 558.8mm.

Based on photos of the 6550 online I suspect the controller is expected to be at the back. If so, that would explain the X axis being backward, however, that would imply you have an issue with the Y axis.

But please confirm.

Does this machine have homing switches?
