Variable Text, cut settings?

I like to build my own test files. Variable Text>cut setting s works well for these in most cases but I was trying something last weekend that I couldn’t figure out.

Two things:

  1. What is the layer name (Cxx) variable for and how is it used?
  2. Is there a way to make the interval variable (I/i) reference an image layer?

Interval (iirc) works fine for a fill layer but I could not get it to work for an image layer. I thought maybe I could use the layer name variable to specify from where LB should pull settings, but I couldn’t figure out what the layer name variable even does. The LB help docs I found aren’t very helpful for that particular option. I tried various combinations of strings to try and get it to do something, but I kept coming up empty.

Any got some good tips for these cut settings variables?

It is used to set the layer for which you want to pull information. Once you specify a layer, all subsequent values in the string will reference the named layer.

For example, if you have a string that looks like this:

C03 s p

It will show you the speed and power values for layer C03.

I don’t see any way to do this. Seems like a gap if true, however, so may just not be apparent how it works.

Let’s ask @Rick for comment on this.

Ah! I think I tried every string variation I’d ever seen used (brackets, commas, parenthesis, colon, ellipse, single and double quote, combinations, etc) and for SOME reason I never even considered a simple space. Duh! Cool. So, that works exactly as I expected. I was just messing up the syntax. Thanks!

We’ll see what Rick says about the image layer.

You actually don’t even need a space. Even just mashed up next to each other will get you some very hard to read text.

Correct, LightBurn does not currently support pulling the Image Layer data using the Cut Settings option within Variable Text. While this has been requested, the level of support and interest helps set priority.

Completely understood. Thanks for the confirmation. At the very least it saves me time experimenting. Also thanks for the link. Will upvote.
