Vectric STL file to a svg to engrave on laser

I have a few Vectric STL files that I would like to convert to a SVG so I can engrave on the laser. Can this be done?

What are you expecting the SVG to look like? Would it be the outline of an orthographic projection of one side of the STL?

If so, there are likely utilities that can do this.

I know Tinkercad allows you to download files as SVG. You can upload STL files so worse case you could upload there as STL and then download as SVG. I believe it assumes the profile of the object on the XY plane.

export out of vetric in greyscale, clipart or stl. you need vetric software to convert them if they are vetric files

Its a STL of an Eagle that I have carved with my cnc machine. I was just thinking it would be great if I could engrave the same file with my laser. My cnc software is Vectric V-Carve Pro, and I am using Lightburn on my laser.

Can you export a flattened svg?

:smile_cat:

In terms of what the laser version of this would look like. Are you expecting to burn at multiple depths to mimic the carved version from CNC?

Or are you looking to just have an outline of the overall shape?

I don’t know how to do that. When I go to export, there isn’t an option to do either greyscale or clipart.

Yes that is what I would like to do! I bought the file from Vectric Design & Make and have engraved it into wood and it looks great. I was just thinking it would look good if I could engrave it with the laser. I guess I want it to look like a photo.

Check out these sites that will convert STL to a PNG with heightmap information:
STL2PNG - javascript edition (fenrus75.github.io)
STL2NC - javascript edition (fenrus75.github.io)

If you burn these in grayscale mode it could give you an approximation of what you’re looking for.

I’ll caution that this will likely take a good bit of trial and error to get right.

Thanks for the tip!

I have Aspire and in the model tab at the top, it has the export options.
