Just updated Lightburn to 1.4.03 and can’ t see the thumbnail in the open dialogue box like I could before, and when I try to open a file older than 2 weeks ago, I do not see it show up on the workspace. It shows the name of the file in the upper left corner, but nothing in the workspace. I am running on both a desktop HP, windows 11 and a Dell with windows 10, and have the same problem. If I try to open a file I created a week ago, it opens fine on both computers, but not something I created October 31 or anything prior to that. I have uninstalled and re-installed Lightburn on the desktop and no change. Checked to make sure there were no folders left on my computer that had Lightburn files in it before I re-installed. Any suggestions as to how I can use my previous files again?
Have you done the dance required to get matching LightBurn configurations on both machines?
I don’t know what that means–configuration? I am new to the OMTech machine and have used Lightburn for the last year with my xTool. On my desktop I don’t have any devices set up because I just use it to design and then move it to the laptop. I have used the laptop for both machines. The problem might be that I just upgraded to the higher license to accommodate the OMTech around the first of November so files since I upgraded aren’t coming in so I can modify them.
That just adds the ability to use DSP controllers, but doesn’t change the program itself.
The problem may be that GRBL and Ruida controllers (and, thus, LightBurn devices) have different views of the world. If the two PCs / laptops / whatever have different configurations for those two types of devices, the workspace will look different.
So I’m suggesting that you have both PCs start with the same LightBurn configurations, which will eliminate a bunch of confusion going forward.
One key difference: the two laser controllers have different origins. Your older designs were made with the diode laser device (because that’s the only one you had, but will be located differently when seen with the CO₂ laser device selected: they may simply be offscreen.
After you load the file, use Ctrl-A
to select everything, then hit Ctrl-Shift-A
to zoom whatever’s selected to fill the screen. If that doesn’t reveal the missing pieces, then something else is wrong.
I did read through the document "moving Lightburn to another computer documentation. I followed the directions of exporting the lbprefs file and in that folder there is no .lbprefs. There are however .lbprefs in …AppData\Local\LightBurn\backup\prefs. I am happy to use them to get in sync with my laptop, but I would really like one device to work first (my laptop) I could live without ever using LightBurn on my desktop and it might save me some headaches.
I did also try to load up a file into Lightburn and try to do the Control A then Control Shift A to see if that would zoom me into anything on my workspace. But there are no cut/engrave layers showing in the dialogue box (as if nothing is loaded). I am happy to send pictures if you tell me where to send them. Thank you for your help though. I can make new files with both machines and cut/engrave them using Lightburn so the problem is with the past files. I am stilll confused. Thanks
Me, too!
@berainlb probably knows more about this stuff than anybody really should, so let’s see what he thinks …
License version shouldn’t affect your ability to load files. All versions should load any other version without issue even if some of the features are not displayed.
Can you upload an older .lbrn file that definitely isn’t showing you content in 1.4.03?
Also, can you confirm whether or not you’re using a cloud drive service?
Is this true also for newly created files?
I was not using a cloud service. I had my files on an external SSD or thumb drive. Just now I moved them to my internal drive and can see my newly created files on the thumbnail in the open dialogue screen and can NOW see about 8 old files out of about 130 files. If I can see them in the thumbnail, I can open them. I can see thumbnails in all of my newer files.
clarification: If I can see them in the thumbnail, I can see them in the work space and cut layer window.
Can you upload one of the older files that’s still causing a problem?
Absolutely the first file was created and cut with the OMTech machine. The second one was created prior to getting the OMTech machine and was created when I only had the xTool machine.

Thanks for your help on this issue.
I can reproduce your results where no shapes are loaded into the workspace.
Unfortunately, upon examining the files I can see that they’re corrupted. Instead of readable XML text the files are unreadable.
It’s possible that the external storage itself is failing or possibly something touched these files in the process of scanning or something else.
This is likely why only newer files are working. They’ve been newly created and didn’t get corrupted.
Have you consistently used the drive to store your .lbrn files? Do you have a backup anywhere that you could reference?
Unfortunately I backed up from the already corrupt drive so my backups are also a problem. It is too bad about the files, but I have learned so much from this experience. I want to thank you for your time and it also gave me confidence that I understand more about what I am doing than I was giving myself credit for. Again, thank you.
In response to your thought about the external drive going bad, I began having trouble with that external drive about a week ago and couldn’t write to it. I reformatted it and copied my most recent backup to the drive. But it was already corrupt, so I put bad files back on the drive. Thanks again for your help.
That makes sense… but still unfortunate.
