thought I’d drop in and chat with everyone…
Well this morning it was 41(edit 35) here in Florida we live along the space coast, yes very cold for us…
gonna be 61 for the high today…
So I got on the laser to cut some 1.5mm wood as usual :)…
my typical setting for this is 28mm/s 40 power…
I start cutting and noticed the laser current was high…hmmm must be the cold…
since we don’t really turn on heating here in Fl… the building inside is around 52, it’s an older building 1972
and we have 4 suites, we use 3 and our tenant cuts hair, convenient ![]()
So what I expected to be cutting at 40w now is running around 62w…
I know how lower temps work with electronics designs, been doing it for years…
but the laser did surprise me to jump a full 20w+…
As it is warming up, the current is coming down a little…
but just thought I’d share the fact that my 130W tube seems to be running at 160W
calculated full power that is
which I have not tested…
But it did strike me, I have a water Chiller, not just cooler and thought maybe I should set the temperature
a little lower , say 18C as the normal setting instead of 20c… not yet !
I know you laser experts will chime in and I look forward to reading your thoughts ![]()
Brrrrr Well it’s just after 6am, I get here at 3am and McDonalds Sausage Burrito sounds pretty good ![]()

EDIT: I wanted to clarify… I did lt increase the power setting to cut my wood..
with the 28/40 setting , the laser was putting put more power… I would have expected 40w
was was actuall getting 62w ish…
I do notice whe I first start cutting with a ‘cold’ laser tube the current is always a bit higher, then after a half hour of cutting and the water warms up the current drops as well as the cutting power..
as expected…
What I did not expect this morning was the fact that a very cold tube would give a lot more output…
so If i could keep the tube temperature around 60F instead of 74F the power output would follow with higher cutting power…
Seems my 130 w tube would work on the high end around 160W
I have not investigated the lower temps affects on the co2 tubes…’
so for now, just gonna do more reading and think about the situation…
