Absolutely true.
The USB cable that came with my xTool D1 PRO is a prime example of just that, it just didn’t work reliably.
And it didn’t even cross my mind that the cable could be the culprit (one of them 
) until I thought “what if…”.
The one I have now is 1.5m (~5’), 3m (~10’) might work, anything longer than that:
might indeed be the only -or at least the best- solution.
Easy to try different cable lengths though, it either works or doesn’t 
Where to get them in Your neck of woods, I don’t know.
Mine are just market variety general cables, nothing fancy.
