XTOOL D1 PRO 20W Laser Firing Issue

I have searched through this forum and have found similar topics/problems, but not solutions. I have an Xtool D1 Pro 20W using Lightburn. I successfully used it in August and that was the last time it was used. I went to do a project tonight and I started by framing. Everything seemed as normal. Next I clicked start and the laser module fan turned on and moved, but the laser did not fire. I have checked all connections and found nothing loose. I checked the lense and it was not dirty. Since the last time using it, a newer version of Lightburn was released so I updated it. I checked on XCS and my firmware is up to date. I tried reverting back to the version of LB that worked the last time I used it 1.4.01, and still nothing. I have verified that the laser is enabled. I have verified that my upload switch is in the correct position. I have removed the sd card and reinserted. I have a steady green light on my power source/adapter. I probably only have about 25 hours on this machine.
When I used it at the end of August, it worked flawlessly and I had no issues. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Does the laser work in XCS?

If you push the Fire button in Move window, can you see the light?

It does the same thing in XCS, frames and moves about the pattern but no laser. Cross-hairs are illuminated. I do not know on the fire button. I will let you know when I get home this evening.

does LaserHead Fan engage and start?
Did you recheck every wiring point from laser head down to the motherboard?

Yes, the fan engages and starts. I get the same response whether I’m in Lightburn or XCS. I have checked the wiring connections (the clips) to make sure they were in good. I have not looked at individual wires. I’m not that techy and definitely do not know anything about electrical. Still having a hard time understanding how anything changed from the last time I used it. I have not moved the machine or anything. The only thing different is I updated Lightburn. As I stated earlier, I reverted back to the version I used the last time the machine worked. Should I try and delete the machine and start from scratch like I was setting it up the first time?

This is unlikely to make any difference.

It sounds very much like a hardware issue of some sort. If you’ve already checked the cable from the controller to the laser module I’d suggest examining the power supply. Do you have a voltmeter to test voltage from the supply?

Were you able to check on the Fire button?

Not yet. I don’t get home from work until 5 pm CST. I have researched a few more posts and saw someone having an issue with the laser spot reverting back to off after doing an update. In the same post someone couldn’t get the laser spot to work during framing. I don’t know if they were having the same issue with the laser not working at all, but they said they found the problem was if the Move tab is not active it won’t work. As long as it is docked and live it was working. Would this be the same for my situation where the module moves and works but the laser doesn’t engage? I very well could have closed that window as I had several overlapping and I couldn’t see my Laser window.

Move window should make no difference but give it a shot. However, given that the problem persists in XCS I can’t see this being related.

No. The fan starts up but no laser.

Two options in this case
a) your module degraded and is faulty
b) you lost PWM signal to your module and you dont have a “trigger” input

2 ways to diagnose it

  1. with a multimeter if you ahve access to one
  2. if the module has a PWM/24v LED activity
  3. by using a different module/Machine (not sure if you have access)

Could you record a small video and show the current behaviour?

EDIT: Go through this check from Xtool itself, as they cover most of the above but with official instructions

That is a thorough article, thank you. I do not have a multimeter to check for voltage. The processing power in XCS is 100%, I’ve checked the cables and connections and they look good, looking down into the fan on the laser module, a red indicator light comes on when the laser is supposed to be firing, the cross-hair is on when machine is on and turns off when processing, the firmware is up to date, the blue light to the motherboard is always on, the green indicator light on power supply is lit and does not blink or anything when processing. I do not have access to anything to test voltage. I do not have access to another module. I’m not sure what the PWM/24v LED activity means. I cannot even comprehend the laser being faulty considering I have hardly even used it. I truly appreciate all of the suggestions and advice you are offering.

Faults do happen

I think you done all diagnostics you could be expected to do
Same page at the very top has details on how to contact support, i would suggest you do and explain them what you already did
(avoid repeating yourself)

Thanks again for your help.

Sorry cant help more
Keep us posted on what was the issue, maybe we can learn for next time

Would a bad motherboard make the laser not fire? I had one of our electronic technicians use the multimeter and the power supply was fine but the motherboard was not getting anywhere near the 25V. No idea the cost of a new motherboard. It is no longer covered under warranty.

There are 3 likely causes from bad hardware:

  1. Laser module
  2. Controller
  3. Power supply

Based on your symptoms I’d guess in that order. However, I’m not super familiar with xTool behavior.

I’d suggest reaching out to xTool even if out of warranty to see if they’ll help sort it out. They may yet still warranty it, especially if it’s not long out of warranty.
