Creating a carving

Say you have a picture that would carve fine but you want to draw a box around the picture so that it carves outside the picture as well leaving the picture looking raised. Is that something can be done in millmage or have to be done with another app?

Yes - you would draw a rectangle around the part, then use that geometry and a Profile operation.

I tried that and it wanted to take out everything including the picture

Can you show a screenshot of what you’re trying to achieve, or share the .mage file?

So the harley stuff is a drawing on its own, I drew a box around it and id like to carve that out

To cut out a pocket around the outside of the logo, you would draw two rectangles, create a Pocket operation, and assign the two rectangles to that operation.

You may be looking for vcarving - this feature isn’t yet available in MillMage, but when we release MillMage Pro in the near future, it will be - you can see development of those features here: Relief Carving - Work in Progress

I’d strongly recommend that any new user like yourself start with the guides we have in our documentation here: Project Setup Wizard: Beginner - MillMage Documentation

Yeah I been going through some but im hands on learner more, what i want to do is carve out from the rectangle all the area to the picture like the areas in red

For that I recommend using the Offset tool

It makes a nice border, which you could then use as the inner boundary of your pocket:

We have a video for how to use this tool here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEJ7ntlmEyU - it’s for LightBurn, but functions the same in MillMage

HD offset.mage (342.7 KB)

OK thank you got it working apparently it doesn’t like small letters, I had to enlarge to 12”x10” with a .1 v-bit to carve out the middle of the A and R but the offset worked very well

Once we make V-carving available to with MillMage Pro you’ll be able to do much-improved letter carving

is this what you are trying to achieve, the way i worked it out.

is ungroup the file , select outside line change colour to match your out line boarder colour than re group

than set operation auto use layer colour to on

when assign operation click on outside boarder not the object as it is grouped

do full preview run of job

i did 2 relief pockets to get the fine detail
