Cutter stops mid job and homes

@LightBurn

Running Smoothie Cluster firmware, LB on WIn10/.64 all ports are always ON (no sleep). this project does not raster anything - only vector engraving / cutting. from time to time my cutter stops mid job and homes.
even though console prints “Stream completed in 2:02” it actually mid job.
ice_screenshot_20200503-145506

First, Here’s the last portion of the streamed gcode.
Below this portion is me restarting the job just to get the same - stops after few seconds.
Please help me and direct me what might be the culprit.

I believe that if that was a USB communication issue we wouldn’t see anything in the console after lost of connection which is not the case as you can see here below.

Thx.

Ninety nine times out of a hundred, the issue you are seeing is because of a poor ground issue or a low quality USB cable. It can also happen if the power browns out, it causes the board to perform a reset. That is why you see it homing.

I would start by making sure all connections are secure, swap the USB cable for a different one, make sure that low voltage wires are not crossing the path of the HV lead to the tube, or AC power wires. I am sure OZ will have some more information for you as well.

Thank you.
I like tidying up my installations so I want to believe all connections are good.
Also, i measured the USB voltage on the cutter side and it is steady on 4.95V-5.01V give or take so i can only guess the USB communication lines voltage are well within specs.

this is a good active USB cable without ruling out it being the culprit. What i am not sure is if the board resets - why do i get all these messages before it homes.

I wonder what triggers “Stream completed” message.

You said:

This is an issue worth investigating, my PC is not sharing the same power outlet as these are in two different rooms. i can use a power extension cord and power my PC from the same socket i power my laser and all supporting systems and give it a try.

But my question is still valid: I want to know how come i get these gcodes commands before it homes.
is this reset/power issue or lightburn communication protocol for smoothie. i don’t know - just asking out loud.

Cheers.

Maybe try editing your device and turn off Auto Home on startup. If your job stops midway through and does not home, that would indicate that Lightburn was losing connectivity to the board.

Good point. will check that as well.

Ran the same job, this time with power = %0, and auto home on startup -disabled-
Job finished with zero issues. Later i will run the same job with full power (to rule out high voltage EMI) and test again.

Stream completed in 4:17

“Stream completed” will happen if the connection drops, and then the G0 / G0 is LightBurn trying to get an ok reply from the board. When it does, it issues the homing command.

An Interim conclusions, - Ran the same job 5 times in a row:

  • Auto Home on startup (ON) & HV off (Laser off) = Ran 5 times, Zero issues.
  • Auto Home on startup (OFF) & HV off (Laser off) = Ran 5 times, Zero issues.

Next I will run with Laser full blast and see if my issues are HV related.
