Files fail to send

Hi Again,

Trying to send a file to test the updated version of Lightburn and keep getting the message " File Transfer Failed ", click OK and second message is " There was a problem sending data to the laser. Just purchased new iMac, updated Lightburn from 1.3 to 1.6 and am running this on an ethernet cable, which I have been doing all a long. Cable is plugged in on both ends, laser is on and Ruida controller is not full. I am stumped here. Additional information: Just connected the ethernet cable to the computer I just replaced ( the old one ) and it worked on the 1.3 version of Lightburn. So it is not the ethernet cable or the 1.3 version of Lightburn.

Thank you,

Jim

Not a MAC Guy, but I will try…

First, Lightburn has no control over the communications channel, it just uses what it is told to use. Versions make no difference, as can be proven by installing 1.6 on the older machine.

This implies the new MAC is the issue because everything else is working. I have read the newer MAC machines default to USB 3.0 for the USB-C connector and will not automatically downshift to USB 2.0, which is the laser protocol.

I also read inserting a dirt-cheap non-powered USB hub between the laser and MAC cures the problem by forcing the MAC to downshift. Hopefully, this is your solution.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the response. My old Mac was too old to update to Lightburn 1.6, so I bought a new one. I agree that the new Mac is the issue. So are you saying that the new Mac uses USB 3.0 and the Thunder laser uses USB 2.0 and will not automatically go to 2.0, hence the communication issue? Okay, that make sense. I will see if I have an old USB hub laying around to try. Does it matter if I am using ethernet for the connection and not USB? Or does the ethernet cable connected to the new Mac via USB-C port automatically converts to USB anyway?

Thank you,

Jim

I may be wrong, but ethernet via USB-C is just USB. Ethernet would be RJ-45 connectors I think. Also, I do not think peer-to-peer (MAC to Laser) networking will work. I think it has to be through a regular network router (like your WIFI) box. Of course, this is all based on I-think-I-know.

Mike,

I tend to think you are correct in that anything you plug into a USB-C or Thunderbolt port on the back of the new Mac is just USB. I did have an ethernet port directly on the old Mac and I do now have an ethernet plug integrated on the power cord box of the new Mac, I am using that but still no communication.

:joy: Amazon Prime is my go-to department store.

If it’s direct Ethernet Computer → Ruida and you’ve configured the Ethernet port properly, it should talk.

I’d suggest you double check your Ethernet configuration settings for the specific port you are using. I would bet on that as I’ve been in the same boat.

Most people don’t know enough about Ethernet to do a direct connect and I’ve made my share of errors doing this… so I’m suspicious. :grimacing:

USB doesn’t come into play here, that’s why we use Ethernet, all hard/software already works over Ethernet.

The Ruida has an led and a console lan status, both of which only indicate if the hardware is connected. Good place to start.

What lan address did you choose for the link?

Hi Jack,

Issue has been solved. Had to consult Brian at Thunder Laser. You are correct, I did not have the ethernet properly set up. Needed to change the new iMac’s IP address to sink with the Ruida controller. I had been changing the Wi-Fi settings and not the LAN.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate it. I was out of town all day yesterday, had no time to update this thread until now.
