Have to reinstall USB driver (CH340) everyday

Hi,

Every time I start LightBurn, I’m missing the USB connection option. Sometimes fully reinstalling the CH34X driver (uninstall >> fresh install >> reboot) will fix the issue and everything works as expected. I say “sometimes” because it often takes multiple tries to work. Today I’ve done 6 full reinstall cycles (including a reboot each time) but no luck, only bluetooth options are available.

Any help is appreciated.

Is this a new machine or a new problem? Has it ever worked properly?

Bad USB Cables are a very common problem as is connecting directly to a USB 3.0 port. Not sure what USB version your Macbook has. Many Mac users have found success by going through a “Dumb” USB 2.0 hub.

If your OS is Mojave or newer the CH340 driver is built in by Apple and there is no need to install a third party driver. That might even confuse the system as to which one to use.

Everything works fine if/when it connects. No concerns over the UBS cable or ports (although I’ve tried multiple ports). I do use a USB-A to USB-C adapter but, like I said, if I can get the USB connection option to show up, everything works.

Should the USB option show up even without the machine connected, similar to how the Bluetooth options always show up? Obviously it wouldn’t work, but that would at least be evidence if the driver is working.

My Mac is on Sonoma (14.7.1). I’ve never been able to get it to work without installing/reinstalling the CH340 driver. But that could be a coincidence.

Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by the USB option doesn’t show up. This is my laser window without a laser connected. This is my design computer in the house.

The connection options drop down menu where you have cu.wlan-debug. When it’s working, there is a USB option in that list.

OK, that shows that the computer sees the USB connection to the laser.

If there is a cable problem or other communication issue it won’t show up. I think your reloading the driver is just a coincidence, particularly since it doesn’t always work. Cables can fail intermittently and if it’s the cable that came with your laser there’s a good chance that it’s faulty.

Try a different cable, one that has the ferrite core on the ends.

Also try connecting through a USB 2.0 hub. They are very inexpensive.

I tried a different cable (USB-A to USB-C, no adapter), which I know works from other usage. USB connection option still not showing up. I’ll get a new USB-A to USB-A and USB 2.0 hub tomorrow.

I appreciate the help.

I have a Macbook Pro also. Took three cables to find one that worked. I ordered it from Amazon, even tried a hub that didn’t work. I plug it into the right side of the Mac. I don’t remember installing the CH340 driver. Your laser may require a USB plug type different from mine.
