Insufficient seperation between targets

I am trying to use print and cut to align two cuts that are larger than the bed, but when i try to align two points I get “Insufficient separation between targets.” I am able to set my first target position, but not the second.

This question came up yesterday. Please review this Topic. Make sure you follow the procedure that Oz has enumerated.

The trick is that you have to actually draw markers over your image’s alignment points in lightburn. Procedure: import your graphic/drawing/whatever (with alignment markers). Select a tool layer in lightburn, then draw something (i like circles), over each of your markers. SELECT one of the circles you just drew. Then navigate until the laser is over the spot. THEN hit ALT 1. SELECT the other marker you drew, navigate to it, and hit ALT 2. Finally from the PrintAndCut menu, chose “Align” with or without scaling. Then you’re good to go with a “Start”.

That is what I am doing. I drew a circle with cross hairs in the middle and selected the first, then went to tools, print and cut, and set my first target position, but when I try to do it on the second mark I get the error “insufficient separation between targets.”

You need to physically move the laser head using the jog controls in Move window to the actual physical marker when you set your positions.

So there are 3 conditions that need to be met for each position:

  1. you’ve selected the object in LightBurn
  2. your laser is physically aimed at the marker
  3. you set the position

Then you do this again for the second target position.

It sounds like you’re not doing step 2.

I just had an awful thought.

If i grabbed the laser head and shoved it into position above the second target, Lightburn would see that as in or near the same place in software because the controller couldn’t count steps and there is no location feedback.

I’m humbly suggesting the wording could include ‘Jog’ and ‘in the Move window’ for clarity.

If you manage to get the first target set correctly (i.e an object other than your image/drawing selected and navigated to) lightburn will offer to jog to the second target (which also must be an drawing element and selected). it usually gets pretty close, and setting the “move step” to a mil or a fraction thereof will finish the job.
