Picture Engraving Help

Depending on the wood you’re using, it can be a challenge to get good contrast without burning deeply. A trick someone posted on Facebook is taking a bit of baking soda dissolved in water and spraying it onto the wood. Let that dry and then try your engraving again (with lower power than usual). The baking soda reacts with heat and gives a much darker burn. This is an example done with a 60w laser, and the settings are included:

You assume I measured. I added about a teaspoon to a 3 oz spray bottle 3/4 filled with water, let it fully dissolve, then misted it onto the wood to saturate the surface and let it dry. No proper scientific testing was done.

Engraving Photos not working as expected

Try a mixture of about 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/4 cup of water. Mix it, put it in a spray bottle (like you would use for spraying perfume). Spray the side of the wood you are going to engrave and let it dry. When you engrave that, it will burn much darker, so you will likely need to increase your speed, or reduce the power when using that method. Otherwise, I would suggest lowering the speed to get a darker burn and more contrast.
