Laser Going Left and Right

I have a Ray 5 10W Laser and it works from time to time but lately its been going across the Y-axis and not burning the piece. When I frame, it goes directly to the work piece but when I start (Fill) laser goes left and right. Offset set at 2.5%

Please let me know what can be the issue.

Can we see a photo of your laser’s output? If your laser is leaving out a portion of your design, it’s possible that a cable is being disconnecting/reconnecting while engraving. It may also be the focus if the material is not perfectly flat. We’d need more information to know for sure and a photo may help.

What do you mean laser output?
Did you want to see my Lightburn settings?

I recorded a video of the laser going left and right but cannot attach here.

I would like to see an image of what your laser did to the material, to better understand what went wrong.

The laser did not burn the material at all. It just went across the Y-axis back and forth. However, it did frame the line I created around the logo.

Laser Tools>Rotary Setup>Make sure that you don’t accidentally have rotary mode enabled.

Did your diode emit any light while moving back and forth? Is your diode focused on your material?

Here’s what to check if you have low or no power: GRBL: Low or No Power Output - LightBurn Documentation

Yes, it does emit light as it is going across.
I am not near the laser right now but will try your suggestions later today.

Will let you know, thanks!

the rotary setup is not enabled

Yes, the diode emits light when framing and when I run the job.
It is focused in, I use a spacer bar to ensure the appropriate X-axis

These are errors I get:

ALARM 3:
Reset while in motion. Grbl cannot guarantee positions. Lost steps are likely. Re-homing is high recommended.

Please let me know

Thanks for confirming what you’ve tried and sharing the message from your console window.

What kind of material are you attempting to laser?

Here’s what our documentation has to say about alarm 3: Troubleshooting: GRBL Errors - LightBurn Documentation

If you scroll up in the console window, were there any other messages?

I don’t think your laser came with limit switches, therefore you need to manually home your laser before turning it on, if using ‘absolute coordinates’ as your start from position. You can learn more about the different start from modes here: Coordinates & Origin - LightBurn Documentation

I am trying to laser leather patches.

You are right dont have a limit switch.
I have attached some photos of the laser moving left and right.
Running at a speed of 200 with power set at 100.

Weird part is it used to work and now after numerous attempts wont fire on the leather patch.
When I change to “Line” on the patch, it fires but when I choose “Fill” it goes left and right.

I also have a video of it running left and right but cannot attach videos here.

Moving from left to right while engraving in Fill mode is expected behavior. https://youtu.be/v3RDzOrlCTM?si=s5jNUzsva74hy91n&t=351

It’s possible that you need to lower your speed, increase your power, and make sure that you are focusing your laser to your material correctly. Post a screenshot of your cut settings editor for review.

You can also confirm that your s-value max is set correctly: GRBL: Low or No Power Output - LightBurn Documentation

It is moving left and right all the way across the Y-Axis as shown in the photos I shared.
It used to burn perfectly about a week ago and when it did, it start burning right on the leather patch.

I used to run at 200 speed and 100 power but since this issue, reduced the speed and power. Tried 80 speed, 80 power…100 speed, 100 power and by doing that it did work over the patch, but was not engraving at all.

I verified the S-value matches the settings and the G code.

Sorry forgot to attach the cut settings. See below:

Change your settings from mm/s to mm/min 200 mm/s is 12,000 mm/min which is way too fast for your machine.

Does your preview window show your laser traveling that far back and forth?

If not, and you’re certain rotary mode isn’t enabled, then I would check for something loose on your machine. This is an excellent guide, I’d start with a tilt test and work your way down the list: Guide to mechanical adjustments and maintenance

Tim is correct, it looks like you’re using a unit better for co2 lasers, not diodes.

Thank you Tim and Jess!
The issue seemed with the settings.

Are there any tutorials on how to perfectly center a logo on a patch?
I frame and sometimes still does not engrave right in center.
