Masking in 3d? can it be done in millmage?

is it possible to ,say draw a circle in a 3d relief and mask it ? for the love of money I can’t get the “apply mask” to highlight???
im trying to say draw a circle around a part of the 3d so I can do tests on a smaller scale . is the another way ???save hrs of frustration!
pat

Maybe if you add the circle to the Op and limit the area.

Don’t use the mask. Select both the 3D and the circle you drew. Apply the tool path to BOTH. that will work.

Place a square over the 3D to restrict the operation and assign the 3D and the square to the Relief Op so you can test the output of a smaller area:

so are you saying ,in MILLMAGE I can just put a square , say on the fare etc 100x100mm and it’ll only carve that area?? that just sounds toooo easy hehe thank will try… does this work as a relief or as the hight file??? thank Parsec
ill give that a try Young Jack!

Relief and Roughing operations allow extra vectors to define the operation boundary. This is intended to allow you to use different bits for different parts of the same engraving. If you have a large, smooth model with a small detailed area, you could use a large rounded bit for the bulk of the work, and then a small bit just for that detailed area.

For example, here’s a project using two bits for 3d finishing:

This is after the 1/4" ball nose:

And this is after the tapered ball nose finishes the facial details:

You can see the added sharpness around the eye, the grill under the eye, and the ports just under that.

Yes I see, that’s ok for different bits but can I only pick, with a square or circle, a smaller area of the reliefe to only carve? Realise I’d have to copy original then add a smaller boundary! But will it only carve that or the lot???

Yes, as mentioned in this reply further up. You need to make sure you select the shape as part of the operation.

Place your shape over the area you want to cut, create the operation selecting both the relief and the shape being used as a mask. Check preview.
