More Boxes.py questions

Hi guys,

sorry for trashing this topic, but it’s kinda related to the boxes.py generator. I am trying to create a chestbox. Tried out the pirate box on boxes.py, but for the size of my box (about 10cm x 14cm) the lid is way to big (arc to high) and it results in a weird looking box. Then I played with their universal box, which has also the “chest” option as the lid. But it generates a box, with “rounded” lid sides and a flex lid top - but the lid is without hinges. And the lid sides are the same as the sides of the box - so also not meant as “over the top” lid. Has anyone ever tried this out? How should I mount the lid onto the box?

Can you post the design?

Hi, sure.

I used the universal box and lid type = chest

This is the downloaded svg from boxes.py

Did I miss a setting somehwere? Thanks for any hints.

Regards,

Dean

That looks like a “lid sit on top” box with no hinge. Did you mess with the Settings for Hinges and Hinge Pins option?

Yes, tried and played around, but didn’t find an option where some hinges would appear :man_shrugging:

Did you cut this yet?

Sure would have saved me a lot of time if you posted the SVG instead of a image.

Yes the lid looks like it’s 11mm to long. I don’t use that site but I’ll guess that may be due to the thickness of the ply you have set.

So you are reffering to a over the top lid? No, I didn’t cut it yet. And also didn’t measure it as it looked jist wrong :face_with_hand_over_mouth: will check once I get to the PC :man_shrugging:

Try cutting it, it may be right.

I am attaching the svg - my measurements show that the lid is same dimensions as the sides…

Does that mean all is good?

No, not really. Didn’t have the chance to do a test cut

But as the dimensions of the lid seem the same as the box it makes no sense. Once I’m at the machine I’ll give it a try :man_shrugging:

Try this SVG file, it might save you some time

Don’t understand? What should I do with the cut out flat without the flex? I tried to cut my svg and the lid sits perfectly on top of the box. Maybe it was meant to use some duct tape to hold it in place?

With a lid that just sits on top, you can add some strips inside the bottom section that stick up a little above the sides. Forgive the quality of my artwork, but Lightburn was the fastest for me.

Correct, and I’m also using Lightburn for such sketches last years - habbit. And cool, thanks for the tip. Also had that as an optional solution - also tried such solution once with another box. It would be an option but it’s not what I’m looking for this time. I’ll close the topic for now. Thank you all

Were you looking for a box like this? … but with a hinged lid?

I was and still am looking for a pirate/chest box which would have a lower lid (not that high) - because it really looks weird when creating a smaller box (about 14cm x 10cm and height around 4cm). In that case I get a box with 4cm in height and a lid which is 8cm high.

Please give your dimensions and material thickness?
You want the lid over the edges right? by how much (h)?
Material thickness is what?
And needs to be hinged but doesnt matter how? and needs to hold open at about 110degs?

If you still want help it will be great to see what the clever & creative peeps here can come up with if we throw this out as a friendly community “hackathon” - when do you need something by?

The tabs in the art Dean provided shows that he is using 3mm material.

If you measure the radius of the lid’s arc and then measure the length of the lid’s top, one might assume the top should measure 6mm longer. But it doesn’t. It measures almost 11mm longer.

Here’s why… when a living hinge is fitted to an arc the underside contracts while the top expands. How much depends on the dot size of his laser and the radius of the arc.

There is a chance the lid is correct as shown in the SVG.

Without him making a test cut all this is rhetoric. We need to know how the lid fits if one wants to make adjustments.
