I can not seem to get the laser to cut throught material i have used for a very long time(3/16 baltic birch ply already- pushing 28ma with minimal depth(more like engraving)

Ideas?

lens is new also

These operate in a very simple way. Generally if you have these three:

  1. properly working tube
  2. clean and aligned optics
  3. proper focus

If you have these three, they, just work.

It’s relatively easy to check the tube. You want to use it in TEM00 mode.

Under any conditions, I’d suspect alignment. That’s probably the most common issue with these.

How long of a lens are you using? Spot size will remain the same within it’s depth of focus( dof).

A normal 2" lens has a depth of focus of only ~2.75mm, not enough depth of focus to encompass an almost 5mm deep piece of material. Proper focus on the top of the material leaves you with 1/2 the dof excluded. You’d need a 4" lens, almost 11mm dof, focused halfway down into the material to use the entire dof.

I would really thing you could blast through this stuff with the power of your machine.

I cut 10mm acrylic with my 50W and 4" lens with few issues.
