I have a RotoBoss Rotary unit with my Thunder laser. I am experimenting with engraving and cutting egg shells. Anyone know of a way to use this to get a design around the entire circumference. So a full 360 degree cut or engrave.
Thank you for the quick reply. At least with my rotary unit, the problem is attaching the egg to it and getting 360 degree exposure without and obstructions. Now, just thinking about this, would a 4 inch lens give me a wider depth of field to help for focussing a non-uniform item?
A longer lens has a deeper ‘depth of field’, but I don’t think it’s enough to cover the curvature of an egg…
I have a 4" and it’s great for cutting thick materials. Trying to think how it would work on an egg… I think pushing the focus to a range of greater than a few mm might be difficult. I’ve cut 5mm mdf pretty consistently with a 4"… maybe it’s something you need to try…
Maybe I’ll try and do a ramp test of my 4" and post a photo, you can then see the depth of focus… Kind of busy at the moment…
I can understand the problems holding an egg in a rotary … Maybe a shaft through the middle … lol
I do not have the 4 inch lens at this time, but would buy one if it helped with this situation. I am working on a solution for the holding of the egg as we speak. Hopefully, I can get something that works. It seems to me that one would need a chuck type rotary so the egg could be between the drive chuck and center end point.
That one drives a spring-loaded pen around the egg (from pole to pole) in a circular arc. You could probably gimmick up something with a diode laser in a much more robust mount, but not a big CO₂ machine.
I think his problem will be keeping anything near a good focus over the area.
It’s also pretty hard to design much art that isn’t affected by the curvature of the egg itself…
Along with eggs don’t come in precise dimensions, which would be handy …
@ednisley loved the egg thing… the site says 10 to 13 y/o, so I’m too ancient for it… I lose another one. I think as I get older it’s all about age discrimination…
