Snapmaker Ray 20W & 40W Laser with LightBurn (How to... and why...)

The sales volumes (and support volumes) seem to be increasing for the new Snapmaker Ray 20W and 40W laser engravers. The dev team has been testing a pre-production unit and everything seems to be going well.

The Snapmaker Ray series engravers use standard GRBL in the controller.

This is a departure from the previous Snapmaker devices using Marlin-based firmware. Selecting the Snapmaker profile in LightBurn will not work to connect with the new controller in the Snapmaker Ray.

The Device Profile has been added to the LightBurn 1.5+ release but the preceding versions will require that the Device Profile be imported.

To import the Device Profile for your Snapmaker Ray 20W or 40W laser engraver download the lbdev (LightBurn Device) file for your engraver.

The lbdev files for the Ray 20W and Ray 40W are available on the Snapmaker site:
Using Ray with LightBurn | Snapmaker Wiki

The lbdev files are also available for download here:
snapmaker-ray-20w-v1.lbdev (5.2 KB)
snapmaker-ray-40w-v1.lbdev (5.0 KB)

After downloading the lbdev file:

In the Laser window in LightBurn, click the Devices button (bottom left), then in the Devices pop-up, click Import, and select the correct lbdev file for your engraver. Click the Open button near the bottom right corner. Then click OK.

Click the Devices button in the Laser window again and find the Device Profile that says Snapmaker Ray (20W or 40W), then click the OK button near the bottom right corner of the Devices pop-up window.

Watch the Console window in LightBurn for a connection message.

If you are not connecting as expected with your new Snapmaker Ray device please start a new thread and tell us what worked or what didn’t work.

Capturing information from the Console window in LightBurn is often very helpful with the next steps.
