Snapmaker Ray - no crosshairs when framing

Okay. Does this mean you’re good then?

yes, everything is perfect, thank you.

I knew that I can set the origin in the dialogue if necessary, but I thought that the origin as it was set until now was set in a basic configuration. And therefore I was looking everywhere but couldn’t find it.

Now I came to the conclusion that there is no other way to set the origin. I hope that it is correct ?

Many thanks again and kind regards
Franz

This depends on what you mean by origin. There are multiple distinct concepts of origin.

  1. Machine Origin. This is configured through a combination of GRBL configuration and Setting in Edit->Device Settings. This looks good for you.
  2. Job Origin - This is the relative position from which jobs start. It is a choice you select in Laser window when the Start From mode is either Current Position or User Origin. It’s not available for Absolute Coords
  3. User origin - This is a separate concept from Job Origin and allows for a user defined origin position. It’s set using “Set Origin” available in Move window.

Hi,

I have come home late today. Could not do anything, sorry. I was talking about the machine origin and I agree, it looks fine. I think my problem is that I have placed the table where the material is lying on, a bit too far to the right. I will test that tomorrow.

Many thanks for today and kind regards
Franz

Hi,

I have now tested different positions of the table but could not find one where both the laser and the crosshairs are usable over the whole work area in x-direction. I have not yet tested the y-direction.

  1. configuration:
absolute coordinates with the origin at 0,0
the crosshairs show the position but the laser head can not move further to the left as it is already at 0 on the x-axis. It would need another 21mm because of the offset between laser and crosshairs.

The right corner at 600,0 works for both the laser and the crosshairs.

  1. configuration:
user origin at 21,0 (offset for the crosshairs)
the left side works fine. Both the crosshairs as well as the laser can reach/cut a square with the outer corner at 0,0.
in this configuration the laser can cut a square on the right side with the outer corner at 600,0 but the crosshairs can not show this position as the head would have to move further to the right, what is not possible because of the frame (resp. linear drive).

My conclusion so far is that I can use the whole work area but only with the laser, not with the crosshairs.

Do I make a misstake with my configuration ? Is it possible to setup the machine so that both work over the whole work area ?

Many thanks
Franz

If you use a crosshair that’s offset from the laser then by definition you will not be be able to address the full area of your laser since the offset itself occupies some area.

If you want to eke out every last bit of area then you could stop using the crosshair and use the primary laser at low power for framing.

yes, that would be an alternative. I just wanted to make sure that there is no solution for the crosshairs and the laser. Could have been that I had a mistake in my configuration.

Hi,

sorry again – may I ask one hopefully final question:
Is the user origin the right way to move the work area to the right in this case, or is there a better way for that ?

Thank you
Franz

I’m not familiar enough with exactly what you’re trying to do to answer that.

The various Start From modes are all effective for their own uses. I personally rarely use User Origin. If at all possible I try to stick to Absolute Coords. For very temporary setups I will use Current Position. However, only Absolute Coords provides repeatability over sessions without having to add steps to store User Origin or Current Position coords ahead of time.

If you can provide more detail on exactly what you’re trying to achieve and some visuals for reference I can try to provide more insight.

thank you. I prefer absolute coordinates as well and I understand now that I don’t need the user origin for moving the work area to the right if I turn off the offset for the crosshairs. I can use the blue laser for framing instead of the crosshairs.

I think this will become my basic configuration, although the crosshairs would have been a nice feature and probably better visible than the blue laser. But one can not have everything.

Many thanks again
Franz
