Some lines aren't imported from .AI files

I just got my laser (using Ruida) for my small business and I’m new to laser software.

I need to cut and engrave to make my products. Cutting lines are red and engraving lines are black. When I import the AI designs, some lines don’t get imported.

I tried importing 2 designs from 4 different artists to see if individual AI settings cause this problem, but it seems to be random. See the image attached.

What could cause this problem and how can I solve it?

Also, the black lines that do show up sometimes overlap. The areas where they overlap get cancelled out and in turn will not be engraved. I also attached 2 images to show this. One with fill rendering on, and one with fill rendering off.

Are there settings in Lightburn that causes this or does this need to be fixed in AI?

For the missing parts, we’d actually need to see the content of the AI file you’re trying to load to figure out why LightBurn’s importer isn’t getting it. There are some features in AI files that LightBurn doesn’t support, like patterned fills or clip masks, so it might be one of those.

The gaps in overlaps are because LightBurn uses an “odd/even” fill rule, meaning that each line encountered toggles the fill on or off, so when two shapes intersect like this, it toggles.

You can see this here too: Why do things disappear when I fill them, but not when I cut them?

To prevent this, make sure the design doesn’t have overlapped areas, and if you can’t fix that in the source software, select the parts that overlap and use the ‘Weld’ button in LightBurn to fuse the shapes together.

Awesome, welding works! We’re currently looking to optimize the AI files so we don’t have to weld but that problem is solved.

Now for the import issue, how can I send the AI files so we can take a loser look?

You can add .txt to the end of your AI file and then post here using the ‘Upload’ button, or drag and drop inline.

Better still is just emailing to Support@LightBurnSoftware.com and linking to this thread so we know what it’s for.
