It looks like you are trying to burn white paper. That can be very difficult with a diode laser, because the white reflects most of the visible diode light. Try using cardboard or something a little darker.

There is no way his Laser is in focus with a blur that big.

If it’s a 405 Nm diode laser, variable focus … (since you ‘twisted’ to the smallest spot), get yourself some ORANGE safety glasses from a reputable supplier - not the red or green ones that you probably have been supplied - and begin by adjusting your laser to about 57 mm ABOVE the surface you plan on cutting / burning / engraving.

THEN ‘twist it’ to the smallest spot.

Now adjust the power to about 0.7 to 1 % power and USE THE ORANGE SAFETY GLASSES, test fire it, and see if the spot is the size of a pinhead.

Be careful, and as suggested above … try a darker material, or a piece of scrap wood (also distanced about 57 mm from your project.
