Hello,
Is anyone has been able to engrave a photo on a white tile with or without tio2?
I am familiar with Norton white tile method on diode laser and would like to know if it works with UV and basically what’s the result.
Thanks

I don’t have a uv machine, and likely won’t, but from what I understand.
NTM uses TiO2 (Titanium Oxide) that creates a molecular bond to the glass or metal. Everything else washes off. There are also other types of coatings mostly designed for co2 machines, but can work in a wider range of machines.
If you note that @Bulldog has done porcelain tiles by NTM method and deep engraving. The deep engraving would likely be your result.
The UV is a bit different. The fiber can’t vaporize or ablate the glass but a UV apparently does. I’ve seen 5V uv lasers cut through glass. This is not possible with the co2, not to mention my fiber seems to pass though glass with no issues.
You should be able to engrave, but they will likely have little contrast to see what you’ve lased without some extra work or depth.
Good luck … hope it helps.
i have a 200w rf co2 laser. the rf has a really sharp rise and fall time, the cheap hvdc excited has a very slow 1ms response time
i ran the rf co2 across a white subway tile at around 5khz and it made a loud shriek. like loud enough that you should have hearing protection.
the tile didn’t look that different but i inspected under a microscope and it has drilled deep, small diameter holes all across it. i couldn’t even see the bottom of the holes
so, i tried spreading paint on it and wiping the excess off. works pretty well!
some interesting options might be reflective “liquid metal” sharpies or glow in the dark powder
20W fiberlaser G2
Titandioxid Alkohol gemisch aufgesprüht
Settings 1000mm/min 12% 30kHz 1045 DPI Javis
Mit diesen Einstellungen auf Keramikfliese
It would be neat to see a microscopic view of the damage your machine did to the tile.
Only my fiber really makes noise, the co2 seem pretty quiet, relatively speaking.
my 60 watt c02 does cut glass
I can mark it easily, but it takes multiple passes to get any kind of depth. If you go very deep it’s a crappy looking job…
The thermal conductivity of glass is very low, so when it heats, it naturally shatters… Not conducive to what I’d consider a usable cut.
I’d like to see what you’ve cut, do you mind a photo?
Hello,
Thanks but your laser is not UV if I am correct.
There is no problem with co2, fiber or diode using NWT. Question is really what’s the outcome on a UV.
Thanks
I made the major mistake of assuming he knew what equipment he had…
I didn’t even look there are so many of these, but I think you’re right, if it’s a Gweike G2 is a fiber laser.
Nice work
uv 5w yes you have to go slowly but do tests for the power! Be careful titanium dioxide is toxic lots of nanoparticles so mask required, laser marking paper is a good option.
I use white paint which is easier to apply than tio2 mix…. Anyway… still keen to see a result!
I hope it works and it is quicker that the diode.
Maybe so, but the removal part is much more of a pita compared to water soluble TiO2.
Whatever you feel gives you the best result.
Have you determined what kind of machine, UV or Fiber that you have?
You can easily scrap the paint with a x-acto blade at an acute angle.
Anyway, back to topic… I feel like the UV just remove the glaze and expose the ceramic color, so grey ish.
Anyway. Looks like not many people have UV laser as yet.
I have both a 5w - UV and a 60w Fiber laser and have not found a way to engrave white tiles without Tio or paint you can do photo engraving on glass and put a black backing on it though. I also find using different color ceramics such as mugs can work without Tio but I haven’t tried anything other than text. (white lettering on red mug). If you have any luck let me know
Try to use laser marking paper, I have already given the solution earlier on this post
What mixing ratio did you use? I want to mix it myself with some pva glue. In Europe paint with TiO2 isn’t that common as it is labeled as toxic when inhaled.
Don’t use glue, egg whites are much better and non-toxic and it works very well!
Marking paper for text works miracles!

If you want them to lase black, then you need something that responds to the laser.
