Does anyone know if it is possible to cut a beveled edge using Lightburn? I am cutting out holiday ornaments in acrylic and a beveled edge would certainly look a little more finished. Any thoughts? Thank you for your time.
In woodworking, to do a beveled cut the saw blade is tilted at an angle or an angled router bit is used.
For lasers I would expect you to have to angle the laser head, so it cuts at an angle. I don’t know if the angled laser beam of a galvo could do this.
I think a stepped depth cut would approximate your bevel, but I do not think it would be easy to do nicely without tilting the work piece in relation to the laser. That introduces another issue that the length of cut would be greatly increased compared to the vertical cut length - that dang Pythagoras’ theory stuff will get ya!
I am a diode guy, so there may be Galvo tricks that I don’t know/
Maybe try a Fill with Ramp On?
PHEW! I was so afraid I was going to get a “well you ding dong, did you even read the owners manual? They covered that in great detail on page 4!.”. So its not just me. I am feeling better already. I am a diode kinda person myself and I think you are right. This is truly best left in the hands of a mathalete! I have attempted to do this a couple times… got the nicest pieces of charred wood you have probably ever seen. Can’t thank you enough for your response and affirmation that it is not an easy manuever. Have a great weekend.
Here is a good one from back-in-the-day…
I also needed a new base for my trim router. I used the laser to cut it from acrylic. To countersink the mounting holes. I cut the through hole with enough power to go all the way through. Then I cut a larger hole using fill with enough power to only to cut part of the way through. Took several tests to get the power correct.
