Warning - Upgrade from 1.7 to 2.0 Has critical defects for some - I reverted to 1.7

Running 1.7 for quite some time on Windows and XTool D1 Pro 20W. Accepted 2.0 upgrade. Out of the blue 2.0 gave warning that said my machine settings do not match machine profile from the machine (never saw that message before). 2.0 gave me an option to adjust to actual machine settings so I accepted. Loaded file I burned yesterday and discovered many things “changed” in the 2.0 user interface.

Simple interface example - right click of cut layer no longer flashes the drawing element - instead a dialog of things to do opens with multiple options instead of just flashing the right clicked drawing element as is true in 1.7. That is a new 2.0 thing - probably better. But it’s a surprise.

Huge bad news - went to burn the same file I burned yesterday (no changes) and laser moved VERY VERY slowly - ruining the part. Even though the burn setting said 1000 mm minute which worked yesterday, 2.0 burned a line 1/4 inch in like 3 mins - really bad. After reading web - I reloaded perfs from a couple days ago into 2.0 thinking my acceptance of 2.0 machine settings dialog warning was at fault. Retried burn - same problems. In short - version 2.0 has stopped my work and ruined a part. I reverted to 1.7 reloaded perfs from a few days ago and it runs wonderfully as it did before. Suggest all users wait until 2.0 gets fixed.

SECOND: - There are enough Unser Interface changes between version 1.7 and 2.0 that prep work is probably needed - prior to upgrading to 2.0. Looking across many posts related to 2.0 - something in going wrong with 2.0 and settings across a bunch of users.

THIRD: This many UI changes should include release notes as part of the upgrade that lay out all the changes so users can understand the new software better with fewer problems.

I cannot spend enough time “testing” to properly document the many things that look like bugs when I have no clue what was supposed to change vs what I am finding in the software.

I love the software - just not 2.0 - yet.

UPDATE: To be as clear as possible - the power settings for the cut list work differently in 2.0 than in 1.7. The settings appear to be the same (loaded from the file) but the laser moves much slower in 2.0 than it did in 1.7 with the same file and same settings ;loaded from that file. 2.0 seems to not control movement the same as it did in 1.7. I do not know how to measure these differences empirically to report in a clearer fashion.

I have also had problems with Lightburn ver 2.00. My laser is a Creality Falcon 2. After installing LB ver 2.00 it would FRAME exactly right but when it went to engrave or cut it would be 180 degrees off so that the bottom of the design was in the middle of the work piece and the top of the design was off the bottom of the workpiece. After the first error then the laser would operate opposite of how it should. If moved forward it would go back. If moved left it would go right. I could not find anything in the settings to correct it. I ended up reverting back to ver 1.7.04.

I installed 2.0 on what I call my design PC (no laser connected) and discovered that, upon opening a previous job, the power settings were not responding to what I was typing in the Pwr Max and Pwr Min boxes (see screen cap). I’ll leave the PC’s running my lasers on 1.07 for now.

Thank you for the link. In the future - a link like this should probably in the “install” messaging part of the “upgrade” casual users do not miss this information. I have installed many upgrades and have never seen these documents or mention of them in the update process - sorry if I somehow missed them.

Thank you again for this link.

When installing a new release, you should be presented with a ‘Change Log’ dialog. Are you saying this did not happen for you?

Additionally, with each release, we announce it on the forum in the “Announcements” section and produce a News / Blog post on our website announcing the release and the changes included.

Below are the links to the most recent release communications:

2.0 has made lightburn look like a child designed it, and no longer fit my screen…how do I change it back?

Um, thank you for your, well, feedback. If you are willing, are there specifics you can share?

Please share, what screen size are you working with?

If you are asking how to restore the layout to fit your screen, share a screencap of what you currently see.

You always have the option to roll back to an older version (<- click) while we help you resolve.

Rick - Thank you for the response! I installed the upgrade using the auto update feature built in Lightburn. It downloads the update for me and tells me to shut down lightburn and run the downloaded update.. That process worked as it always does for every other update.

I will re-run this process to see if it actually presented me with what you share I should be seeing and I’ll eat crow on that happily if the information is there. After that test I will get back to you. I will then re-install 1.7 because 1.7 actually works for me 2.0 does not. *

None of this however makes up for the release not working right out of the box. What seems to be broken is core device control processes - which is really basic to Lightburn’s intended use. No need to answer this - but I wonder how is it possible core functionality is failing fully tested and freshly released software? It really does look like insufficient core functional testing took place given what the release notes say (and what I see on the web site from other users) has been done for this release.

On a positive note - What you guys undertook to accomplish with this realize is huge and most changes are good innovations. But that much change and changing the underlying architecture as it seems you have done can break a lot of unexpected stuff. Congrats to you all for giving it a shot and getting it done at all!!.

Thank you for bringing the links to my attention and for giving me the great info I needed. I will be watching for a new 2.?? release. If you want me to test a release candidate - let me know.

Yes, please. We encourage all who are willing to check out our Release Candidates. We announce these releases in the ‘Announcements’ section, and they are tagged with release-candidate. In fact, we are working to produce a patch release candidate shortly.

As you note, this was a considerable undertaking, which we tested both with our private beta tester groups and via Release Candidate to the public for feedback. This involved hundreds of users with many different configurations/computers and laser systems. Even with this rigorous testing, stuff occurs; it’s software. Things happen. Knowing this, we fix what gets reported as fast as possible and get those fixes out to everyone when confident we have resolved the reported issues. Thank you for your patience, along with your continued comments and feedback.

I assume this is dark mode, which it won’t change? How do I shrink the icons? my 14" screen, I want the greatest design space.
Many thanks

Thank you

Please don’t say that! We all learn from each other

Mea Culpa, what I perceived as an issue with the software turned out to be the fact that if you enter a half percent value in the Pwr Max, Pwr Min boxes, Lightburn will now round up to the next whole number. The UP/DN arrows still changes the value in 2.5% increments, but the Spd/Pwr block will change to the next higher whole number. I will be familiarizing myself with all the new changes in 2.0.

Any idea on how to get it to fit my screen?

This may be what you are experiencing, worth review.
